Why should I use your company for financial advice?

We offer expert financial advice at a reasonable price. We are part of Protection & Investment Ltd, a group of 13 individual practices, all with differing areas of specialism, meaning that if appropriate we can usually refer within the company when more specialist advice is needed.

How long has Protection & Investment been trading and what are your credentials?

Protection and Investment Ltd (P&I) provides independent financial advice to individuals and companies. It began in 1999 following a management buyout of the AA’s financial advisory business when a number of Independent Financial Advisers (IFAs) decided to come together in pursuit of their shared commitment to putting the customer first.

Do you provide your advice on an 'independent' or 'restricted'? basis?

We offer completely independent advice. This means we are completely free to recommend the very best products available to every client. We scour the whole market to bring our clients the very best solutions to help them achieve their goals.

Do you have a 'typical' type of client?

We work with a range of different clients. From those in their early twenties who are looking to begin their financial planning, through to those in retirement looking to ensure that they have sufficient funds to maintain their lifestyle until the end of their life. We work with very wealthy clients as well as those with more modest means. There really is no typical client. We find that our clients fall into one of a number of categories, each with different needs, but we understand that every client is an individual with unique goals, hopes and ambitions that we help to fulfil.

Are your services only for very wealthy people?

No. Our services have been designed for everyone. Whatever your net wealth, we can help you identify, achieve and maintain your desired lifestyle, simplify your finances and make your investments work harder for you.

Do you advise clients throughout the UK and overseas?

We are based in Totton in Southampton and most of our clients are based in the south of England. But with modern technology it means that we also have some clients in other parts of the UK. Clients based outside of a reasonable commute to our office will typically meet with us via the phone or have virtual online meetings. We do not advise clients based outside of the UK.

Why are you any different from other financial planning firms?

Many Financial planning firms are not independent, often they are appointed representative firms tied to a network that works from a limited panel of product providers (Restricted). We are directly authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and are free to advise on products and providers on a whole of market basis, having access to almost every product and provider in the marketplace. Protection & Investment is a co-operative made up of 13 practices and owned by its advisers giving us a wealth of knowledge and experience – we can often refer a client to a specialist adviser within the company.

Do you hold on to my money?

No, we never hold client money directly. All client money will always be held by an authorised investment company or an authorised insurance company. All investment products and providers we recommend are regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).

Are you authorised to give advice?

Yes, we are authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).  Our FCA number is 222993.  You can search the FCA register of authorised firms and individuals to check this for yourself.

How much will it cost me?

Our initial meeting is always free of charge and with no obligation, we then assess how we can help you and inform you of the charges applicable going forward. The cost will depend on the work to be undertaken.

What is a 'fee only' planning firm?

A financial planning firm that is only paid by way of fee.  Depending on the type of product being advised on, we will always give you your options regarding payment for our services. Fees are paid by you as opposed to a commission paid by an insurance company. We charge primarily by way of a fee that is often able to be paid via the investment company rather than directly, but we can be paid directly by you if you prefer.

Can you help if I already have a financial adviser/planner?

Yes, we are always pleased to offer a free no obligation first meeting in order to discuss your circumstances and whether our services would suit you better than your existing adviser.

If I want to meet with you face-to-face, can I do this?

Yes, that is our preferred method of contact. We feel that by meeting with you face to face, usually in the comfort and convenience of your own home we can build a better, more personal relationship and obtain a better understanding of you, your family and what you are looking to achieve.

I think I don't need much help with my money - why do I need a financial adviser?

In our experience, most people can benefit from proper financial planning.  A financial adviser will help you fully understand your financial position, help you clarify your goals, and put a plan in place to help you towards achieving those goals. We will regularly review both your situation and also your financial products to ensure that they are still suitable for your needs.

Do I need to use all your services or can I just pick and choose the things I want?

We offer a full review and service, but if you just want to concentrate on one aspect of financial planning, be that retirement planning, mortgages, protection or otherwise, we are happy to assist you.

How do I know how much I will be charged?

Before we start work on your behalf, after the free initial meeting, we will always inform you of the cost and ensure that you completely understand the amount you are being charged and how.  All charges will be disclosed to you in writing in advance.  Please see the individual services pages of the website for more information on charges.
